WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE RETURN
Sunday, 11th of August, saw our Walking Football squad take part in the latest regional league fixtures.
It marked the penultimate round of fixtures in the 2024 Walking Football Over 50s East Championship League campaign, a return to league duties for the Saints in the Community Walking Football team following their recent appearance in the Walking Football Glasgow Cup at Toryglen. The Saints in the Community squad were looking to get their league campaign back on track after what proved to be a tough round of fixtures previously, picking up defeats to the league’s top 2 sides, Forfar & Carnoustie, and a draw against Tayport. Looking to bounce back, the 7 strong Saints in the Community squad headed to Dundee’s Regional Performance Centre for what promised to be another challenging but exciting set of fixtures.
The first match of the day saw the Saints in the Community squad face up against 4th place Arbroath. The game proved to be a close encounter with both teams having their chances throughout. The Saints in the Community squad believed they had scored the opening goal, only for it to be disallowed due to a foot in the box. Shortly after, an Arbroath counterattack put them in the lead, adding a second goal late on to secure a 2-0 victory.
Next up was another tough game against 3rd place Fairfield. Once again, it was a tight affair, with the game remaining scoreless until the final five minutes. However, it would be Fairfield that broke the deadlock, scoring two well-worked goals in quick succession. The Saints in the Community squad managed to pull one back through a penalty, but it was too little, too late, as the final whistle blew immediately after, ending in a 2-1 defeat.
Determined to finish the penultimate round of fixtures with a win, the Saints in the Community squad faced Dundee in the Tayside derby. It was an electric start from the squad, who hit the bar, the post, and forced the Dundee goalkeeper into multiple great saves while limiting Dundee's chances. The Saints in the Community squad eventually found a way past the Dundee goalkeeper, scoring two goals in quick succession. Although Dundee managed to score a wonderful strike with only a few minutes left, the Saints held on to secure an extremely valuable 2-1 win and 3 points to end the day.
Game 1: Vs Arbroath (2-0 defeat)
Game 2: Fairfield (2-1 defeat)
Game 3: Dundee (2-1 win)
It was another challenging set of fixtures for our squad. However, a valuable 3 points to end the day see’s the squad finish the penultimate round of fixtures sitting in 8th place with 3 games to go. The squad will be looking to take confidence from their final performance of the day to climb up the table on the final matchday in October. Overall, it was a positive day for the Saints in the Community squad where they could’ve easily taken more from the matches.
