2024 WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE RESTART
Sunday, 4th of February, saw our Walking Football squad take part in the latest regional league fixtures.
It marked the beginning of the 2024 Walking Football Over 50s East Championship League campaign, a return to league duties for the Saints in the Community Walking Football team.
The 2023 Over 50’s East Championship proved to be a highly competitive league, with the title remaining undecided until the final round of fixtures. The Saints in the Community squad finished the 2023 campaign in 6th position out of 9 teams, after being unable to field a squad for the final round of fixtures. Dundee United Community Trust won the championship title and subsequent promotion to the Premiership.
Our team started their 2024 campaign at Dundee’s Regional Performance Centre with a healthy squad of 10 players, looking to build on last season’s position.
The first match of the day saw our players face Montrose who managed to pip the Saints in the Community squad to 5th position during the last round of fixtures last season. The game proved to be a tightly contested affair with both teams looking to get their league campaign off to a positive start. Unfortunately for our Saints team, the game was decided by a quick Montrose counterattack, resulting in a clinical finish and a 1-0 defeat for the Trust. Next up was league newcomers, St Duthas. In what proved a very entertaining match, the Trust managed to score late on to secure a 3-2 victory in a match which saw 3 penalties awarded during the 20-minute game. The third and final match of the day saw our players face up against Hibernian. Some clinical finishing from Hibernian saw them run out 4-0 winners.
Game 1: Vs Montrose (1-0 defeat)
Game 2: St Duthas (3-2 victory)
Game 3: Hibernian (4-0 defeat)
It was a challenging start to the 2024 league campaign for our squad, but they managed to secure valuable points after the first round of fixtures. The Trust currently finds itself in joint 8th position in the expanded 12-team league for the 2024 season, joint on points with both St Duthas and Hibernian.
