WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE RETURN
Sunday, 27th of August, saw the Saints in the Community team take part in the most recent Walking Football Scotland round of fixtures.
It was a return to league action for the penultimate round of fixtures at the Regional Performance Centre in Dundee for the Saints in the Community Walking Football team in the Over 50’s East Championship.
Prior to the round of fixtures, the Community Trust’s side found themselves in 5th position still in contention of catching those above. With Highland Utd pulling out of this league event, our players found themselves going into the day with 3 points.
The first match of the day for Saints in the Community was a tough challenge in the form of second place Carnoustie Primrose. Ultimately, the game would prove to be a cagey affair with the game ending in a scoreless draw and a point on the board for the Trust. Next up was Tayport Yellow. Unfortunately for the Trust, they were unable to break down the team from Tayport and for the second time, a scoreless affair. The third and final match of the day saw the Trust face up against Montrose. The game would see the squad break their scoring duck in the round of fixtures picking up a 1-1 draw.
Game 1: Vs Highland United (3-0 Win)
Game 2: Vs Carnoustie Panmure (0-0 Draw)
Game 3: Vs Tayport Yellow (0-0 Draw)
Game 4: Vs Montrose (1-1 Draw)
A tough but encouraging day for the Community Trust team who went through the round of fixtures unbeaten, picking up 6 points in the process. The penultimate round of results saw the Saints in the Community squad cement themselves in 5th place in the league, giving themselves a slim chance of catching some of the teams above them. Dundee United currently find themselves in the driving seat for promotion, 6 points clear of second place Luncarty going into the final round of fixtures.
Walking Football was first introduced to Scotland in 2012, starting in Midlothian through the Hibernian Football Fans in Training programme. In June 2015, the first National Walking Football Tournament, organised by Age Scotland, took place in Edinburgh with 14 teams competing.
Moving on to April 2017, Walking Football Scotland was established and, in September of that year, achieved charitable status, becoming affiliated with Age Scotland, and working in close partnership with the Scottish FA, SPFL Trust, SAMH, Drinkaware, St John Scotland, and Prostate Cancer.
